Mark Fleischman, renowned for owning the iconic Studio 54 nightclub, has passed away through assisted suicide in Switzerland.
At the age of 82, Fleischman faced mobility issues and speech impairment following his illness in 2016, the exact nature of which remained undiagnosed by doctors.
“I can’t walk, my speech is f–ked up, and I can’t do anything for myself,” he disclosed to The Post last month, expressing his struggles. “My wife helps me get into bed and I can’t dress or put on my shoes. I am taking a gentle way out. It is the easiest way out for me.”
An owner of Studio 54, Fleischman had mingled with numerous high-profile celebrities during the nightclub’s heyday.
“I liked to be high. So I would do drugs and drink. Possibly, this [health condition] is because I drank a lot and did drugs,” he confessed to The Post.
After enduring prolonged suffering, Fleischman made the decision to travel to Switzerland to undertake a lethal dose of barbiturates.
His former business partner, Daniel Fitzgerald, informed BBC News that Fleischman’s passing was a result of assisted suicide.
Fleischman had collaborated with the nonprofit organization Dignitas, established in 1998, which is dedicated to aiding individuals in ending their lives when their health deteriorates. Members of Dignitas thoroughly reviewed his medical records and engaged in conversations with him.
“The more I think about it, the more I want to do it,” Fleischman had expressed. “I am flying direct to Zurich from LA. There will be no last party.”
