Amy Tinkler is a former British artistic gymnast who had won a ‘Gold’ medal at the 2015 English Championships (all-around, balance beam), the 2015 British Championships (all-around, floor exercise), the 2016 English Championships (vault), the 2016 British Championships (floor exercise), the 2018 English Championships (all-around, vault, uneven bars), and the 2018 British Championships (floor exercise). Besides that, she had also clinched ‘Bronze’ medals at the 2015 World Championships (team event), the 2016 Rio Olympics (floor exercise), and the 2017 London World Cup (all-around). She retired from the sport in January 2020 after a spate of injuries had hampered her 2018 and 2019 seasons. Another reason that had hastened her abrupt retirement was the inaction by British Gymnastics, the governing body for the sport in the country, on a formal complaint that she had filed with them in December 2019. Her letter had alleged issues of systemic weight-shaming and mental harassment; along with a ‘culture of fear,’ that was prevalent in the organization.

It was Amy’s mother, Nora, a recreational gymnast herself, who had introduced her to the world of artistic gymnastics when she was just 2 years old.

The first gymnastics club that she had ever practiced in was in South Durham and was known as ‘The Pink Gym’ as all the furnishing and equipment in the club was pink in color.

Amy had won her first national medal, a ‘Silver’, when she was just 9 years old. She had started representing Britain in international competitions when she was 11 years old. She has particularly excelled in the floor exercise event, winning the ‘Gold’ medal at the national level for 4 years in a row – at the British Junior Championships (2013, 2014) and the British Championships (2015, 2016).

When she won a ‘Bronze’ medal in the floor exercise event at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics, she had become the first British female athlete ever to win an Olympic medal in that particular event. She was also the only British female to win an individual medal at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics in the artistic gymnastics discipline.

She was only 16 years old at that time. With her path-breaking Olympic ‘Bronze’ medal, she had also become just the 3rd British woman to win an individual artistic gymnastics medal at the Olympics.
